Check out this video of Patrick Roy's son going to town on some unsuspecting, unwilling goalie from another team. Herein lies the definition of a sonofabitch.

Reminds me of one of my favorite pictures of all time
Can anyone defend the actions of the young Roy? I doubt it....

To be up 4-2 away going into the third period and lose 5-4 has gotta be pretty demoralizing for your Flyers. They gonna bow out early just like your Phillies?

Your knowledge of hockey is only surpassed by your knowledge of football. Anyone who watched the game would have seen that the turning point in this game was a 5-4 that turned into an extended 5-3, not because of a penalty, but because on defensemen was lying on the ice holding his nads (much like you with this new gig).
The ref should have blow the wistle, the flyers would have kept their 4-3 lead and we would have walked out of there with a W....

Geez, without the help of the officials, the Caps get shut out at home! Flyers should be heading home 2-0.

Great skill in hockey may be tough to discern for the untrained eye, but anyone that has actually been to a game will quickly appreciate the pace at which the game is played and the amazing athleticsm that the players demonstrate. Ultimately what makes the sport superior to football, baseball, basketball and also soccer is that the end to end action is continuous and always exciting. A goal can happen in the blink of an eye, which always keeps you on your toes, and you get long stretches of play...

I love hocky- I really do! I’m not here to suggest that it isn’t a great game... because it IS a great game. But it will never hold a candle to the “Big 3” in the United States. Why?
1) The majority of Americans cannot appreciate the game because they cannot play the game themselves. Most Americans can’t even lace up a pair of skates let alone play (me included!). Other than the basic rules (which are, let’s face it... pretty basic!) few understand many of the intricacies which make it a...

Even without their top scorers, the Leafs continue to roll. A big win in Ottawa Saturday sets up for two great games with Boston. I say the Leafs should keep winning!...

Cowboy2 this is the fundamental problem with Leaf fans.. They suck for the first 70 games and then start to win near the end of the season. This puts them in the same situation fighting for 8 and end up in 9th with a crappy draft pick.
Mind you I hope they keep winning as I hate the leafs and as a Sens fan would only like to see the worst happen to them. Finnish in 9th with out of the draft lottery and a shitty draft pick.
Good luck leafs!...

As no more than a casual hockey fan, I don't get a chance to do many smackdowns on the NHL. But this Zednik accident is one of the most bizarre things I've seen in sports. I can't believe they didn't immediately end the game. The guy had his CAROTID ARTERY SLASHED for God's sake!! He was hemorrhaging blood on the ice. They should have immediately stopped and played the remaining 8 minutes at some future date. The dude easily could have died. What needs to happen to discontinue play in the...

You can't even compare these things. I've never seen a football injury even close to this. A guy leaves the field, maybe even on a gurney, and maybe even paralyzed later. It's scary, everyone says a prayer, but the game goes on. It's not like an episode of ER. Zednik nearly had his head taken off. 30 more seconds on the ice and he probably would have bled out.

Trigginator, hockey is a man's sport, not one for the squeemish. If you really want to call yourself "Trigginator" you need to stop smelling daffodils and stop worrying about a few harmless gallons of blood on the ice. Does the NFL stop games when players are lying crippled on the field or have to be carried off on a body board? Remember Dennis Byrd?

Can't compare these things? That's ridiculous. Nothing is more chilling than watching a football player lying prone on the field, unable to move any of his extremities. Let's look at history. How many deaths or paralyzing injuries have you seen in football and how many have you seen in hockey? The fact of the matter is, a slice to the neck is fixable, assuming you act quickly, and there are plenty of doctors in the arena. The spinal injuries in football are much more disconcerting. Now stop creating more accounts and voting for yourself. Actually, this site needs voting transparency. I need to see who is voting against me so I can call them out too.

After watching nine hours of NHL Hockey Playoffs on Wednesday night, I contemplated a Shootout in the Playoffs after the first 20 minute overtime. Although I was on the edge of my seat for the double overtime win for the Sharks against Nashville, I struggled to watch the entire four overtimes between Dallas and Vancouver.
The shootout has been very successful in the regular season, so why not include the shootout after the first 20 minute overtime session in the playoffs, similar to World Cu...

Divot, I strongly disagree. The negatives of shootouts determining playoffs outcomes greatly outweigh the positives.
I acknowledge that shootouts are thrilling- they don’t call them “the most exciting play in sports” for nothing. And, in principle, who doesn’t love the idea that a “winner” can be declared (who wants to go home and kiss their sister?!?).
However, to let the outcome of a playoff hockey game be determined by anything other than playing to a proper conclusion is simply unfai...

I am a hockey lover. Raised in the Detroit area you can't help but be a huge fan of the Wings and the NHL in general. But....
Each year I become less and less interested in the regular season for a few reasons:
1. Home ice means less in Hockey than it does in other sports, so after 80+ games in the NHL regular season, the home ice advantage you earn has marginal value
2. A hot goaltender trumps all else in hockey. An eight seed with a hot goalie trumps all others.
3. The rules change...

Let’s get to the heart of the matter, Wolfie- you’re simply exhibiting extreme frustration at the fact that, for the past 489 straight seasons, the Red Wings have earned the President’s Trophy only to be promptly embarrassed in the first round of the playoffs to a team with a bit of heart. It’s the same story every year (who’s leading the league in points at the moment, btw?)...
Anyway, let’s address your issues point by point:
- Home Ice. Agreed- home ice in hockey means much less than ...

Let's make it official: hockey is dead. Along with the pogo stick and hula hoop, it had a decent run but its time is over.
The games are televised on OLN, which I couldn't find with a GPS system. Three quarter of its players sport mullets. The Stanley Cup (which averaged 600,000 viewers nationwide last year) is less popular than repeats of the "A Team."
Trigginator is right: Extreme Ironing is hot. So is the giant pancake toss, cheese rolling, and the World Pooh-Stick Championship Ra...

The NHL, with one minor adjustment, could find itself competing with the other major sports in the U.S. Make the goals bigger? Nope. Get rid of fighting? Hell no. Introduce half-naked, skating wenches/snowplowers during stoppages? Been there, done that. What they need to do is get rid of Gary Bettman. Get an old fashioned, seal-clubbin' Canadian to run the show. Not some clueless American (Queens native no less...i'm ashamed).
With the right marketing, the NHL could certainly flourish. Even ...

I have seen Alex Ovechkin play live several times now and he absolutely blows me away. The size, speed and skill he plays with are something special. Mario was the last guy to show me this type of ability...no one has come close since. Ovechkin has been playing for a crap team for two years now but still manages to lead the league (or is always close) anyway. What a beast!...

Um, yeah right! Like, the other day i was like watching Sidney Crosby in his super-cute Reebok gear and thought how much hotter he is than Ovechkin. I totally texted my girlfriend Jen on my Sidekick to check him out on TV. I nearly wet my panties when I saw how much vision he had on the ice. Like, seriously, he knew where everyone was like at any one time. Ohmigod, the tape to tape passes and the way he sets up the play in the zone. The totally nasty Ovechkin and his imperfect jawline is soooooo...

Saw Wilbon pose this question back in mid-June on PTI, and it occurred to me that I had been religiously soaking up news from NFL minicamps, but had no idea which two teams were playing for the Stanley Cup. I'm not atypical. A few weeks ago, a San Jose Sharks game was the lowest-rated sports TV program in the week for the Bay Area. It got lapped two or three times by BOWLING.
I'll leave it to others to detail the reasons why. More foreign players, a sport most people never play themselves...

I'll actually argue this smackdown from the other side. NFL minicamps vs. Stanley Cup isn't even a contest. Not only does the Stanley Cup barely register on my sports radar, but I consider NFL minicamp to be more interesting than most sporting events period. I lap up every tidbit. But hockey... unless I'm at the tank pressed to the glass, it's hard for me to pay attention.
I don't know why. Intellectually, I should like it -- speed, violence, scoring. I'm even from Wisconsin wher...
