Yeah, I know, its still only May, but I saw JaMarcus Russell on the front page of the Sporting Green last week, so it can't be totally out of line to talk some football.

My topic today-- who not to pick first in fantasy football drafts this summer.

Tom Brady -- Don't do it. You don't get to count his 2007 numbers. Sure Brady will come back with a vengeance from his embarrassing performance in the Super Bowl, but expect more like 32-35 TDs and 3800 yards without Moss to stretch the field-... more

13-3 last year, a loss in overtime in the Conference Championship and one play from getting into the SuperBowl, their starting quarterback is runnerup for MVP. Last year was a great year for Green Bay! Much of the last year's team is back and their star quarterback decides to come out of retirement. And they don't want him? Are they crazy? Does anyone really think they are a better team this year with Aaron Rogers? Don't... more

Ted Thompson had this coming since his arrival in Green Bay. He wasted a first round draft pick on Rodgers with his first draft. To avoid not looking like a total idiot, he had to put Rodgers on the field before Aaron's contract was up. Of course as we all know over these past few weeks, Thompson ended up looking like a total idiot anyway.

I don't agree with the decision, but they had to make it after all the ill will they created with their treatment of Brett.

The truth of the matter is that this current administration never wanted to keep Favre. They dangled this "open competition" thing out there and now they have the mother of all circuses on their hands. The mismanagement of having Favre as the hall of fame QB began with Ted Thompson choosing Rodgers with a first round draft pick rather than selecting a player to help win a ring with Brett. Now they have allowed the situation spiral into the worst situation for everyone.

I disagree I think the players know that if Brett is there they have a chnace to win. I think management also thinks this that is why they don't want to release him or trade him. OK, this takes away all the emotional crap around when did Brett retire and why?

The answer is simple, Brett Favre had one of his best years last year. There is no reason to believe there would be any major falloff between last year and this. If anything there could be some improvement as the young receivers have some experience, Grant is established as a runner so they can't just drop back in pass coverage and the line is that much more solidified.

I'm going to put forth a crazy hypothesis: maybe, just maybe, the coach, president and GM, who watch these guys play every day, actually think Rodgers is the better QB. It would have been infinitely easier for the Packers to take Favre back. Do you think McCarthy, his former QB coach, a guy who probably knows Favre's skills as well or better than anyone, would have made this decision lightly? Do you think he is pursuing a course that would make his team worse? Hurt his own career?

I put the full blame for this situation on Favre. I love the guy, but the BS he has pulled this year (and the past several years, for that matter) is inexcusable. This is the opposite of a team player. The reality is, Packers fans, we all have to move on from the Favre era. And Favre, himself, has to move on. He's created a giant mess, caused irreparable damage to the team, created a no-win situation for everyone, and whipped up one of the most over-blown, over-hyped media carnivals in rece... more

You think Ted Thompson is making this decision solo??? No one in the Packers organization wants Favre back. The reality is last season is a fluke for a 38-year-old QB. If Favre had put up a season like he had the previous 3 years, nobody would be clinging on to the belief that he's still an elite QB. Do I think it's possible that he could "throw more TDs than INTs" (not a very high bar of accomplishment, by the way), sure. But do I think it's PROBABLE? No. I don't.

Let us not blame Brett for all of this. While he did make a mistake in retiring. Ted T. is to blame for not allowing him to come back. We play for superbowls not developing a team for the future or going down some mystical road that Ted talks about in his press conferences. It is not over, never was, the season starts in September. Prediction: Ted T. will be gone after this season is over and Favre will end up on a team with a winning record and throw more TDs than INTs.... more

This fiasco with Favre is my worst case scenario as a Packers fan realized. The only way Favre could have more dramatically tarnished his reputation and his legacy would have been if he'd gone on a tri-state killing spree -- and, even then, if one of the three states had been Illinois or Minnesota, he probably would have gotten off in the court of Packer public opinion. But instead we have to deal with this giant goat rodeo of a media spectacle. I was so upset that he retired in the first pla... more

I'm not sure I really understand your argument. I agree with most of what you said. He's creating a mess, probably for nothing, and probably one that will get worse before it gets better. I think the majority of Packer fans already don't want him back -- I saw a poll to that effect, and read that there was a "rally" in support of Favre in Milwaukee at which only 30 people showed up. I almost don't want to watch the news coverage of this, because it *does* ruin my image of who he is and what he's meant to the organization. The fact that he'd want to end his career on a bad note with the team he's played for almost his entire career is really hard to swallow.

What did you expect? I love Brett Favre but he's an emotional, confused professional football player. He says what he thinks. He has almost no filter. He thinks that he is bigger than the organization and who is telling him something different. He thinks he can throw balls through people and he thinks he can run through the Packers. This thing would die if: 1) The Packers fans (like me) make it clear to him that they are tired of this. He has to be a man and stick to his decision as hard ... more

This is such a simple question. He could start on just about every team in the NFL with the exception of Indy and New England. He is healthy. His arm is still strong, ESPN says he is throwing 50 yard passes on a rope to high school players in Mississippi and he is one of the best to ever play the position.

The question is not whether he should play it is where. As a packer fan I am hopelessly biased, however, in the win now environment of the NFL he is still the best QB on the Packer roster.... more

I agree that a day at the races can be fantastic and I’m all about it. On Melbourne Cup day, I get into the spirit of things, head to the track, and enjoy a great day out drinking and punting. But that doesn’t make me a fan.

A “fan” supports a club/team/player. A “fan” knows history. A “fan” knows the rules intimately. A “fan” knows (and usually hates) the commissioner (or equiv) of the sporting body. A “fan” gets absorbed and, a key point here, does it all-year... not just 1-2 days/year! Those who watch a sport 1-2 days/year cannot claim to be fans- an “interested party”, yes- but not fans in the true sense of the word.

Read the challenge again and think before you type, ShitStain. I'm not saying O-linemen aren't important. I'm not saying Miami doesn't need a radically improved O-line. I'm simply saying that forking over $57.75 million for a guy who hasn't played a single down in the NFL is ridiculous. This deal will make Long the highest paid O-lineman in the entire league -- by quite a bit, actually. His 5-year, $57.75M deal gets him an average of $11.5M/year. According to my research, the next closest guy is Joe Thomas, LT with the Cleveland Browns who has a 5-year, $43 million deal (only $8.6M/year).

Even better, let's compare the Jake Long deal to a guy like Steve Hutchinson. Hutchinson is a 3-time pro-bowler and one of the best, most reliable, veteran O-linemen in the entire league, and the Vikings signed him as a free agent for an average of only $7M/year. The Dolphins could have signed 2 stud O-linemen for the price they're paying Long.
