Just like all other sport leagues it benefits the league if they have what they call large markets to be in the finals. The NHL has tried this for years AKA Toronto Make Beliefs. The problem with Beasley is fit. Most NBA teams either need a solid point guard who can direct the offense, or a big man who can dominate the boards and get gravy baskets. Beasley is neither. He's a talent, no doubt. But if I were the Heat I'd trade down. They could probably get a Shaq replacement big man and a Wade complement point guard for that #2 spot.... more

I'm a Warriors fan, but there was something I never totally liked about Baron Davis. The guy just never felt like a true closer to me, or a true champion. He was just dragging, un-motivated (and sometimes injured) at clutch times. With Ellis coming into his own, they might be fine without Baron -- as long as they go out and get some playmakers in his place.... more

What was that last night? The Celtics, from the supposedly weaker Eastern Conference, who had barely made it by the lowly Hawks, suddenly came to play. And the Lakers just had no fight left. Gasol was man-handled...again. Kobe couldn't get anything to fall. And their bench was non-existent (still not sure why Luke Walton even has an NBA contract except for his geneology). Dude the better team won. All the Lakers have is a selfish Kobe, you stop him you stop the team. There was no chance the lakers or any western team would have won. The celtics were pegged to win from day one with PP, KG, RA on the same team. Plus I think Phil got out coached. he did what he does sit on the bench and not say a word how are the lakers going to get motivated with that on the bench scared to say anything to Kobe.

That game last night was a joke. The celtics are a real class act shooting 3's and reverse dunks when they are up by 40. My lakers let me down, but obviously in the 22 years since the celtics won a title they forgot how to be classy winners.

I think pierce is being over shadowed by KG and the rest of the stars on the team and has to resort to faking injuries to get the crowed behind him so he can be the hero. Too many stars on one team and not enough Ball to go a round. I laughed my ass off when I seen him in the wheel chair and then come back to the court and score a couple of three's. What would have made things interesting is if he would have wheeled him self on the court sitting in the chair and started to play murder ball and s... more

While I agree with you that the entire injury thing was ridiculous, to say that Paul Pierce is being over shadowed by ANYONE on that Celtic team is ludicrous. He has been THE MAN through every series in the playoffs. His balls are big and bursting with loads of confidence. Game seven against Cleveland was a Pierce extravaganza and then he continued his awesomeness against my Pistons, unfortunately.

So the Chicago Bulls somehow managed to sneak up and take the #1 pick in the NBA draft lottery, which leaves them in the enviable position of getting to choose between Michael Beasley and Derrick Rose.

Reminds me of having to choose between Dwyane Wade and Carmello Anthony. And and I'll that question today-- which of those guys would you rather have for the 2009 season if you could pick today?

But back to this years draft. I think Beasley is the right guy-- a lefty who can effortlessly... more

Packer Backer, I will concede the point that having a guard like Jordan, Magic, Kobe, or LeBron on your team is a good thing, and if any of them were in the 2008 draft, I would take them over Beasley. But so is having a forward like Bird, Worthy, Erving, Barkley, or Duncan. What I am saying is that Derrick Rose, while showing flashes of brilliance all year and sustained stretches of dominance in the tourney, is still a very unproven commodity. Remember Corey Maggette who was a freshman at Duke in 1999 who came off the bench but showed such potential that some were calling him the #1 pick before he fell to #13 with Seattle. Beasley already can score from anywhere on the court, and just because SOME guards can develop a dependable jumper doesn't mean Rose will. Don't get me wrong, as a fan, I'd be more excited to have Rose on my team, but John Paxson will look at the lack of inside scoring in the last 20 years and will take the sure thing-- and he's right to do it.

I'll take Rose. We'll see if Beasley will want to bang night in and night out in the NBA to get those 20 / 10 games. How many guys in the NBA actually get 20 / 10? Try nobody. A solid point guard that can score is much more important. Whether it's Jordan, Kobe, LeBron, Magic, the most dominant teams have been led by guards (with few exceptions like Duncan). The only knock on Rose is that he can't shoot that well. Neither could Kobe or Jordan when they first came in the league. And your a... more

Now that we know the Chicago Bulls have the number one pick in this June's NBA draft, the pressure is on them to make the right pick. There are only two choices, Michael Beasley and Derrick Rose. Sort of like last year, when it was between Durrant and Oden.

It's not a slam dunk decision, but I think you have to go with Derrick Rose, for the following reasons:

1. A top notch playmaking point guard is the hardest thing to acquire in the NBA. When you get a shot a great one in the draft, you... more

You are right that Rose was dominant in the NCAA tournament, but he wasn't even the best player on his own team for most of the year. He has all the tools, but I am not ready to roll the dice on him, and the Bulls won't either, despite his hometown roots.

Everyone wants a Chris Paul, but how do you know you are not picking a Stephen Francis or Stephon Marbury. Beasley is somehow who is guaranteed to give you 20-10 a nite, and will score effortlessly from anywhere on the floor. And he's got... more

Is there really any doubt? The Spurts were lucky to get by the hornets last night. Gasol will give Duncan (no relation) all he can handle -- plus he hasn't been playing well anyway, almost fouled out of last night's game with like 18 points. And whoever comes out of the East is going to be a joke. The Celts can barely get their shoes tied, so I think the Pistons take the East. But it won't matter: Lakers will take either East team 4-0 in the finals. Won't even be close.... more

4-0 in the Finals? That's a big claim. Reminds me a bit of what most people thought of the Giants chances before this year's Super Bowl. I'll take you on Colonel. With a Celtics game 1 win already in hand and Detroit looking sluggish after a week's rest, I think you'll see Boston advance in 5 games. Chauncey was not a factor on offense, and if he's still hurt, you are not gonna see Detroit make a serious run. Pierce is rejuvenated and as long as he's knocking down shots and Garnett keeps his all around game intact, it won't be a close series.

So its the favorite past time of every talking head. I agree that all the comparisons become quite annoying, especially the ones that just don't make any sense at all, like Chris Paul and Magic Johnson. Even the Isiah Thomas / Chris Paul comparison comes up, which is ridiculous because Isiah played a much more athletic style of hoops. But, there is one Chris Paul comparison that is pretty darn good and that one is Kevin Johnson of Phoenix Suns fame.
