This smackdown was accidentally entered in twice. I engaged tim a few weeks ago but there was little activity on the site so I am resuming this debate by responding a second time.

Mr. Tim, you knew I couldn't resist this one. Fortunately for Michigan, we will not be swirling at the bottom of the toilet like the Irish are right now. Here are just a few reasons:

1. Michigan doesn't have academic standards to block Rodriguez from recruiting his guys

2. If Rodriguez can make West Virgina... more

1. Michigan doesn't have academic standards to block Rodriguez from recruiting his guys

2. If Rodriguez can make West Virgina a top 5 program with his recruiting and strategy, there is no doubt in my mind he will be able to do it with Michigan recruited guys.

3. Rodriguez brought Mike Barwis with him from W... more

A little known fact: Steve Spurrier votes his beloved Duke Blue Devil football team 25th in the coaches poll every week until they lose their first game.

Spurrier has won national championships. He deserves to get a ballot. If he was voting them 1st perhaps it would be a different story.

Too bad he didn't go to Appalachian State. He would have been right last year. *8-)... more

tv ratings are down on new years day, the tv ratings for bowls are not much better than the regular prime time shows they replace...because they don't matter. Make them all matter like they did pre-BCS. Pick the top two after the traditional bowl rivalries and let them play a plus 1 game. There won't be three undefeated teams in this format. Big Ten champ vs Pac Ten champ in the rose, SEC champ in the Sugar...just like old times.... more

a playoff system then makes it less likely that every regular season game matters...that is another important aspect of college football as there is so much riding on every game. traditional bowls plus 1 game gives everyone a reason to travel to the top 5 bowls as everyone in the top 10 thinks they have a shot at the prize. good for the student athletes, good for the venues, good for tv....

I don't think there's any dispute that the BCS sucks. It's actually amazing how unanimous that sentiment is, and yet it carries on. For me, the debate is what do you replace it with? A plus-1 game would, no question, be better than the crappy BCS approach. But that doesnt, for me, really address what makes the BCS so un-satisfying -- that unless you're a top seed you have no possible way of winning a championship. In the format you propose, it's unlikely the championship would ever be lower... more

Interesting argument, but I don't buy that players/fans would care less about each and every game if it was a playoff format. In fact, I think it makes the urgency of every game greater -- because you want to A) get in to the NCAA playoffs period, and B) get as high a seeding as you can. With the bowl format, as soon as your team loses bowl eligibility, you tune out. But in a 16-team playoffs, it's very possible that the 4th, or 5th teams from strong conferences will still be fighting for a playoff berth (and, therefore, championship) late into the season.

Outside of OSU, is there anyone in the Big 10 that you would fear playing in the NCAA tournament? How do they send 6 teams when Syracuse doesn't make the tourney?

Wisconsin will be lucky to make the Sweet 16, and it goes downhill from there. Purdue, Indiana, and Illinios are a joke. Illinois only played OSU and Wisconsin once and probably shouldn't be in the tourney, and you can't trust Carter and P... more

How many seasons of college football do we need to sit through with the BCS system in place. Is there anyone out there, anywyhere, ANYWHERE, who thinks the BCS is a *good* idea!?!?! It's ruining college football. We need a playoffs. Everyone wants a playoffs. The NCAA would make triple their current bank by going to playoffs vs bowl games. I could care less who's in some meaningless bowl game, but I would watch every single first-round game of an NCAA college football championship. This s... more

The greatest regular season in all of sports is in college football .... the sole reason -- no playoffs. To me, the entire regular season has the feeling of playoff intensity. Let's keep it this way so that college football remains relevant from August all the way through January. NO PLAYOFFS.... more

The Big 10 has a storied tradition and has won lots of tournament games. MSU won it all in 2000, Indiania went to the finals in 2002, and Illinois went to the finals two years ago. The Big 10 has gotten no respect this year, and when it sends 3 teams to the Sweet 16, that willl quiet down the critics. These teams played a tough conference and non-conference schedule, justifying the 6 bigs. Besides do you really think Air Force is better than Purdue or MSU?... more

Every time this year as the hype builds around the NCAA basketball tournament, I'm reminded how mind-bogglingly lame it is that NCAA football goes by the idiotic BCS system to determine the national champion. With all the controversy, speculation, discussion, suspense around just who will make the list of 64 in basketball, you realize how foolish it is that we let pundits basically decide the 2 teams that will be crowned champion in football. What if they just selected the top two bask... more
