Help
First of all, the only thing we can help you with is your use of the SmackNatter site. The pathetic future of your favorite NFL team, your gambling debts, and the dismal state of your love life are your own issues.
Most problems can be addressed by reading the answers below. Start there. If this doesn't solve your problem (or if you have a comment or suggestion), send us an e-mail. Note: we aren't very diligent about reading our e-mail, and we reserve the right to either ignore you or send you a semi-insulting response if your question is answered below.
I forgot my password
Easy. Click here and we'll send it to you.
I can't log in.
Make sure you're not being bone-headed. Is your caps lock on? Are you using the complete e-mail address you used to register? Are you sure you're using the right password?
I can't change my profile.
If you found this page, then you almost figured it out on your own. Click on "My Profile" at the top right of every page. Then click "Edit Profile". Make your changes, then be sure to click submit—otherwise, they won't get saved and you'll be pissed you have to do it all over again.
How do I upload an avatar?
Once you've made it to the "Edit Profile" page (see previous), all you need to do is click on "Browse" and find the image you want to use. Make sure you save your image someplace on your file system that's easy to find. Keep it clean, kids.
How do I find the best smack talk?
Finding fresh smack is easy. Go to the home page to see what's featured and what's recent. Or go to the main page for your favorite sport: NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, Soccer, College-Football, College-Basketball, or Other. If you don't see the topic you want to smack about, post a challenge and get something started.
How do I vote on a SmackDown?
Voting is easy. Just click on the title of any SmackDown to go to the detailed SmackDown page. There, you can see the full posts of both SmackDown participants, as well as any comments other SmackNatters have posted. Then, you can vote by simply clicking the "Vote" button, and you can post your own comments. You can always change your vote by going back to the SmackDown page, and clicking "Change Vote".
Okay, the first thing you need to know about the leader board is that you can't even carry the jockstraps of the people listed on it. These are the all-stars of the Smacknatter community, and they've earned that distinction by winning more Smackdowns than anyone else.
Do you dare dream of some day gracing this hallowed list of trash talking all-stars? The only way to do it is by winning one smackdown at a time. Smacknatter keeps track of every smackdown you win and credits 100 points to your profile for each victory. You also get points the more people vote for your SmackDown—2 points per vote if you win, and 1 point per vote if you lose. The more smackdowns you win, the more points you score. And top point scorers make the Leader Board. Simple.
Are you the best trash talker out there? Go ahead and prove it and get listed on the Leader Board.
What if a SmackDown I wanted to vote on has expired?
Once a SmackDown is decided, you can't vote. But you can always start a new SmackDown. Issue a challenge to either participant of the closed SmackDown. Or, send an open challenge to all comers.
How do I get into a SmackDown?
You either need to accept a challenge, or issue a challenge that another user accepts. Then, it's game on!
How do I issue a challenge?
There are several ways to issue a challenge. A few ways you can try:
- Click on a specific user's profile page and click "Challenge Them" on the left margin.
- If you see a comment you disagree with, click "Challenge to a SmackDown" next to that user's comment.
- From one of the sports topics pages, click to issue a challenge.
Challenges can be sent to specific users by entering their user name or e-mail address, or can be "open challenges" that anyone on SmackNatter can see and accept.
Help initiating a SmackDown/Challenge?
Get your freak on! You're ready to throw down a challenge. Challenges can be sent to specific users by entering their user name or e-mail address, or can be "open challenges" that anyone on Smacknatter can see and accept.
Send Challenge To: Enter the Smacknatter user name or e-mail address of the person or people you want to challenge (Separate email addresses or user names with commas (,)). You can also select email addresses from wherever you keep your contacts. We support Microsoft Outlook, AOL, GMail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Plaxo and others. The first registered user to accept your challenge will be your opponent.
Open to Anyone: Select this box if you want anyone in the Smacknatter community to have the opportunity to see and accept your challenge.
Sport: Categorize your challenge so others can find it among the following major sports topics.
Other Tags: Allow users to find your challenge through more specific terms, using tags. Tags can be any word or phrase you think describes your challenge. Remember, the more people that find your challenge, the more people will vote and comment on your challenge.
My Position: If your challenge is accepted, this will be the title of the smackdown that other users will see. Use a title that poses a good question or debate topic in a concise sentence. Examples:
- Who is a better quarterback, Tom Brady or Peyton Manning?
- Iverson Trade: Who got the better deal, Sixers or Nuggets?
Supporting Arguments: This is your big chance to show your dominance. Your opponent, upon accepting your challenge, will see and respond to this statement. So write a convincing argument that will win you glory.
How long do SmackDowns last?
SmackDowns are live for 3 days. Just like a real sports game, there is currently no way to change the clock. And no time outs. When it's over, it's over.
How do I make sure I win a SmackDown?
Uh... get the most votes. To do that, you better get your posse out and voting for you. You can tell them about your SmackDown by clicking "Tell a Friend" at the top of any SmackDown page. You can also click "Invite" from the top-level navigation to get more of your friends on SmackNatter. They have to be members to vote.
Nobody is accepting my challenge.
That probably means it was lame. "LaDainian Tomlinson rocks!" is a dumb-ass challenge. Is someone going to argue he doesn't rock? The better challenge is "LaDainian Tomlinson is a more dominant back than Barry Sanders in his prime." For a challenge to be accepted it needs to be controversial, provocative, and open to debate.
How many SmackDowns can I participate in at once?
As many as you think you can handle. There's no limit.
What do I get if I win a SmackDown?
Points. 100 points, to be exact, for each SmackDown you win. Plus, 2 points for each vote you get if you're the winner, or 1 point for each vote if you're the loser.
Are points worth anything?
Nope. Just bragging rights. Having more points than your friends proves you're a better smack talker than them. Having enough points to get you on the Leaderboard means you're a stud smacker.
How do points work?
You win points for winning SmackDowns. You enter SmackDowns by issuing or accepting a challenge. You win SmackDowns by getting the most votes. You get votes by posting the best smack and getting out your vote. Is this all starting to make sense to you?
Here are all the ways you can earn points on SmackNatter:
- Win a SmackDown = 100 pts
- Get Votes (Win) = 2 pts per vote for winner
- Get Votes (Lose) = 1 pt per vote for loser
- Make a Good Comment = 1 pt for every star from another user
How can I invite my friends?
Simple. Click Invite, enter their e-mail addresses (separated by commas), type a message, and click "Send Invite."
How can I invite a bunch of friends?
From the Invite page, click "Add from My Address Book" and you can import addresses from where ever you keep your contacts. We support Microsoft Outlook, AOL, GMail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Plaxo and others.
I can't find my friends on SmackNatter.
First of all, make sure they're members. If they aren't, tell them to sign up or send them an Invite. If they've already registered, then you can find them by searching by their user name or e-mail address. Once you find them, just click on their avatar to go to their profile page and click on "Add to Friends" to save them to your friends list.
How come my friends can't see me?
Just cause you added someone to your "My Friends" doesn't automatically mean they feel the same way. They need to add you to their friends list the same way you added them. Not all friendships are mutual.
What if someone adds me as their friend and I don't even know them?
Who cares? You have an admirer. They probably think your postings are funny. It's not like they get any benefit from listing you as a friend. If it's really bugging you, challenge them to a SmackDown.
I want to get rid of some of my friends.
Don't we all. If there's a friend you want to remove from your "My Friends" list, just click "View Friends" from the "My Profile" page. Then remove the offending friend by clicking "Delete." This will remove the user from your "My Friends" page, although they may still list you as a friend (till they find you deleted them and they're pissed!)
I saw something offensive on SmackNatter.
The correct answer in most situations is "suck it up, rookie, this is a smack talking site and offending people is kinda the point." But if it's really bad (threatening, racist, sexist, etc.), then report it. Users who violate our terms of use will be shut down. If they only said something stupid, then call them out—challenge them to a SmackDown.
I can't find Australian rules football on SmackNatter?
Unlike the early days of ESPN, you have to search a little to find the more obscure sports. There are pre-defined categories for NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, Soccer, College Football and College Basketball. Australian rules football, curling, steeple chase and other favorites fall under the "Other" category. But, by all means, throw down a challenge on anything you consider a sport. If you and the other 8 amateur javelin fans all get on SmackNatter, we'd love to be the top site on the web for your sport.
Who can see my comments?
Any comment you post related to a SmackDown is viewable to any visitor on the site. Only other registered users can post responses to your comments. If you want to say something directly to another registered user, you can either issue a challenge to that user, or click on .Send Message. from that user's profile page.
I made a comment I now realize is utterly idiotic. Can I remove it?
Hmmm... that's a bummer. It's out there now, so you're going to have to live with it. Your best bet is to post another comment refuting your earlier idiocy. You cannot have a SmackDown with yourself—this is a PG-13 site.<.p>
Do I have to vote in order to comment?
No—you can comment, you can vote, you can do both. You can even comment for one side, but vote for the other if you want. Although that would make you look indecisive and lame.
Do I have to comment in order to vote?
Didn't we just answer that one?
Who can see my profile?
Any visitor to the site can see your profile. But only registered users can send you comments, vote, issue a challenge, or participate in a SmackDown.
Do you sell my information?
We barely have any of your information. I'm sure your non-sensical user name and funny-only-to-you avatar would fetch big bucks in the nefarious world of direct marketing, but our ethics are above that. We do not share any personal information you submit. But, remember, anything you post on your profile is in the public domain. So don't complain to us when your boss discovers you're a latent Yankees fan.
Does SmackNatter cost anything to join?
No, because we're really nice guys.
Do you allow Chicago Bears fans to use the site?
Yes, as long as they don't create a SmackDown claiming Rex Grossman is the best quarterback of all time. Or of the 2006 season. Or of the NFC Central.
