Wolverine is winning on quantity, not quality

That's right, Wolverine, I'm coming for you.

The numbers speak for themselves on this one, folks. Wolverine's Smackdown record is 11-7-2. 11 wins is solid, sure. But look a bit farther down the leaderboard. The ill-named msmith492 is a daunting 5-1-1. SmackDaddy is off to a solid smack start at 4-1. If they keep up those records and muster just a bit more output, Wolverine will be in trouble.

The vote totals are even more damning. In his 21 Smackdowns, Wolfie has garnered a vote margin of 83-78. Just 5 more votes for his smack than against. Msmith492 is at 37-20, and SmackDaddy at 27-11... For those of you who always check the winning percentage column in the standings, that's .649 for msmith492, .711 for SD, but just .516 for Wolverine.

The perils of emphasizing quantity over quality are well-known.

Now look. I'm 2-4, so you might think I should have nothing to say here. But if I'm going to work my way up the board I'm starting with the top. We need to collectively step to the plate and keep the leaderboard honest.

bMoney, I welcome the challenge.

Indeed, I am a bit of a smackdown whore, but for all the right reasons so don’t be a hater.

My portfolio of natter is both diverse and deep, which allows me to venture forth into a wide variety of topics with gusto and acumen. I can tackle some of the toughest bathroom issues, skate deftly on the big pond, battle in the trenches, hit the hardwood, play with the boys of summer and still dig into my bag of tricks and whoop your ass in any unspecified “other’ category.

There are times when I come up a little short, including a loss to TheColonel in which he rambled on about how a 16 seed would beat a 1 seed in this year’s tournament. I lost to your heartthrob msmith492 on a smackdown about nice guy Tommy Amaker – you guys that voted to support Tommy are all suckers. I inexplicably lost the Mavericks smackdown even though I laid out facts that demonstrate how f’ing good the Mavs are this season.

On the positive side, let’s consider that I, Wolfie, took out the undefeated Smackdaddy last week and probably will yank his undies up over his head in two more days.

Last, I would like to point out that I only accept challenges on tough topics. I’m not out there reaching for low hanging fruit like msmith492 often does.

On another note, I do agree that the point system on this site assigns too many points for a win versus considering how many votes have been accumulated. Perhaps if/when traffic is higher the nominal value of a win won’t skew the leaderboard as much as it does now.

Don’t underestimate quantity

I'm glad someone said something, Money-Man...

Wolfgang, you're embarrassing yourself by saying that you haven't been reaping and sowing "low hanging fruit". A look at your history shows cheap victories in the area of flush toilets and avatars- tsk tsk!

Even after reading your reply with an open mind, it clearly falls short- your portfolio is diverse, but not deep; the stats speak for themselves. You can have your keg of Schlitz; I take a sixer of Sammy's.

Can't hate on someone who participates in the process. bMoney is that cat who sits back in the back of the classroom and makes fun of the kids who are trying to learn something through participation. Looking at bMoney's history is kind of comical in of itself. He deftly battled that powerhouse BrITneyLover, and then any other mindless challenges. I'll take someone who will take a stand on issue as well as battle on the issues.

Rock on Wolverine. It's not your fault that the points make no sense.

Now hang on there, smithala. I'm not hating on Wolverine; we've had plenty of amicable exchanges and I read his smack like the New York Times. I'm just making a point about the leaderboard. And while I'll admit to engaging in some less-than-stellar challenges, I've also tried to make the 'Natter better for the community--leading the charge away from the 5-day SmackDown, calling out bad usernames (they seem to run in the Smith family), etc. And I'd say you've issued some questionable takes yourself, say for example your current one on "bandwagons" (where someone I know is kicking your ass) and your not-quite-gender-neutral positions elsewhere... But I don't hold those against you. Even A-Rod whiffs sometimes. That's what the 'Natter is all about: you bring it, and let the people decide. With a bit o' fine-tuning, I'm sure the founders can find a scoring system that reflects what the people, in fact, have decided.

bMoney and smithala, excellent posts. It's all good. That's what the 'Natter is all about: you bring it, and let the people decide. Much credit to both of you for pointing out some shortcomings of this site.

SmackDaddy, let me remind you that the autoflush toilet smackdown was initiated by me after a frustrating day in the office. I didn't go find some low hanging fruit challenge. Many people actually value autoflush toilets, so that was no slam dunk.

Wolfenstein, let ME remind YOU that I've issued you with no fewer than four smackdown challenges and you've chosen to accept only one (the non-sports related one, I might add). I suggest that smackers who don't accept challenges should incur a penalty.

Wow -- fantastic SmackDown. There's so much to digest that I can't think of much to add.
