We all know that performance enhancing drugs will ultimately have an adverse effect on an athlete's life, but athlete's "athletic" life is usually short-lived, and there are only so many TV commentator spots and assistant coaching spots available, maybe shortening their actual life will assist in their retirement planning.

Absolute crazy talk, Vee!

Performance enhancing drugs do much, much more than simply affect an athlete’s “athletic life”. For starters, the complications associated with the attempt to gain an unfair and unnatural advantage by using PED can be life-threatening. Lyle Alzedo, FloJo, and Ken Caminiti are merely a tiny sample of the countless athletes who have faced premature and undignified deaths as a result of these types of drugs.

The greater concern is the associated social costs that reach well beyond sport and the athletes themselves. The treatment of addicts, increased crime, and the overarching message to youth/aspiring athletes that drug use is socially and morally acceptable must all be considered. Illegal drugs of any kind are dangerous to the user and to society- even “social drugs” (just ask Len Bias’s family).

No, PED’s should not be allowed.

Exactly my point Smackdaddy: Using PEDs can be life-threatening. And if they want to risk it, it is their choice. No rules and regulations are going to stop usage. If you think differently, you need to hang out with Nancy Reagan. The "Just say No" campaign is the most significant reason for the increase in marijuana use in this country and the increase in quality as well, since cracking down on South American countrie's imports only brought the dope growing inside, under lights, and in unbelievably productive and potent conditions.
The only way that the use of PEDs will stop is by more athletes taking the plunge- the consequences have to be real. The IOC slapping hands is hardly a consequence.

The only other way I see usage declining or disappearing is for folks like you and me, and all the others on Smacknatter and all over the world, took a stand and uniformly stopped watching and caring about sports. That ain't happening any time soon Smackmydaddy.

Steroid use is a direct byproduct of the over-emphasis our society puts on sports, and the pressure athletes feel to achieve greater and greater physical accomplishments. They should be legalized and encouraged immediately. If dudes aren't hitting 762 home runs a season by the time I'm 70, I'll be disappointed.
