Smacknatter needs to support dialog

Talking smack is about dialog.

I say, "the Niners suck," and give my reasons. You say, "The Niners kick ass," and give your reasons. But when I read your lame-ass reasons, I should be able to respond and tell you that they are, in fact, lame-ass.

I'd like to see at least a two-layer dialog: each person makes their challenge/response, then you get one more chance to weigh in before the time runs out.

Smacknatter uses a point/counterpoint format and not a debate format. What's the problem with that? The advantage with starting is that you get to create the title, which surely influences the reader. The responder then has the advantage of the last word. Numerous layers of response back and forth would be tedious to read. It would be like voting on message boards, which are usually at the level of emoticons and bRiTnEyLuVR-style screen names. Clearly, we can rise above.

Also, your argument is lame-ass. Zing! What's that? Did you just say something? No? I don't hear anything, so I'm left to conclude that you agree.

Very interested in what the user community thinks about this topic. The idea of the current design is that smackdown participants can comment on each other's posts indefinitely by simply adding a Comment below as I'm doing now. But the question has been asked if we should specifically provide a rebuttal field that only the smackdown participants can post to. Interested in comments other users have on this subject.

Great topic. How many rebuttal opportunities should be afforded if the site went that direction? One, two,....

I voted for First String, but I don't mind the point/counterpoint. It reminds me of the closing arguments when i watch Law and Order. Sometimes, I even write my counterpoints while mimicking Sam Waterston. I need a new keyboard though, cause growling like that makes me drool. A lot.

I think rebuttal opportunities in the body of the smacknatter makes the most sense. Points are made that need to be smacked down over the voting period. The comment section is for voters to agree/disagree or add to the debate.

I think a rebuttal field, allowing for 1 to 3 rebuttal opportunities, could be a great addition, as long as it's formatted so that it doesn't dominate the page--because the other comments really add a lot, in my opinion, and they shouldn't be drowned out.

I initially made my claim before I realized that the smackdown participants could comment on their own posts. So far it seems this format works pretty well too, allowing participants to rebut outside comments as well. But the rebuttal format could allow for more zingers, more real smack.

By the way - how do I stop voting for myself and "star"ing my own comments? I do like my own comments very very much....
