Patriots spying debacle is overblown

I'm tired of hearing about Belichick's spying "scandel" 24/7. I don't know the exact rule, and I agree that some punishment is due if the Pats are in direct violation of the letter of the law. But comparisons to steroids??? C'mon. Trying to steal the other side's play is an integral part of football. It's part of what makes the game fun. Why do you think we have huddles? Why do players study game film? Why do QBs survey the defense under center? Why do coaches use signals to call in plays? Why do coaches cover their mouths when they talk? How many times have entire playbooks made their way to opposing teams in the era of free agency? Trying to figure out what the other side is going to do before they do it is as much a part of the game as calling plays in the first place.

As I say, the Patriots are probably due some punishment. And, I'm sure there is worse stuff going on (how hard can it be to hack the the radio frequency to the QB's helmet?). But I don't think this compromises the game.

Hey Cheese Wiz, I'll tell you why the debacle is not overblown: It truly effects the integrity of the game. The NFL cannot have this type of activity getting out to the public because everyone starts questioning the outcomes of games. They start wondering why every blitz is picked up with a beautifully designed screen play... or why a draw play on 3rd and 23 opens up for a massive 30 yard gain.

I have also heard that the Patriots are famous for screwing around with head set and helmet signals at crucial times during games. For instance, last year (or a year earlier, I can't remember) the Lions were in Foxboro, effectively driving down the field when suddenly there communication signals got jammed and they could not hear the plays. A team as crappy as the Lions can't overcome an oversize blade of grass on the field let alone a jammed signal. That just ain't cool. There are apparently many stories like this. Sure, Patriot jealousy runs rampant, but it sounds like they don't do it clean enough for my liking.

The Patriots have been pulling crap for too long and it is finally catching up with them. Now Belichick won't be able to afford as many beautiful gray sweatshirts.

If Tom Brady weren't a Woverine alum, I'd fully support this video:

Good for you Trigger. Is this anything more than just a way for everyone who's tired of getting their butts kicked to weigh in and bitch? Yes they broke the rules and got hit what must be one of (if not the) heaviest set of penalties in the history of the NFL. Does anyone really think that this is why they've been that good? Did you watch the Chargers game last night???

The Pats win Sunday was one of the more impressive things I've witnessed in sports. After the level of scrutiny and pressure they endured, they went out and left no doubt about who the best team is in the NFL. My enthusiasm is obviously amplified by the fact that the Pats performance shut down LT and the Chargers D -- both of which were going against my FFL team!

There is a line, and all I know is that videotaping all of the other teams' sidelines to have a video library of all their signals to correlate with the plays run on the field is on the wrong side of it--WAY on the wrong side of it. But Trigg is right. This is not even in the same league as steroids, and has gotten WAY overblown.
