There's something strange about Lakers fans. I'm not sure I need to say much more than this picture...

...but it strikes me that they're not really "fans" in the traditional sense. In fairness, I've never been to a game at the Staples Center (would like to), but it seems like games there are more of an entertainment spectacle than a sporting event. I don't think Lakers fans really care if their team wins (or maybe they expect it) -- they're really just there to have fun. I guess there's nothing wrong with cutting a 2-4 out of grocery bags and writing "Kobe Bryant" on it with magic marker after you've had 15 beers, but the dull grin on this guy's face betrays his half-hearted fan-dom.

Gotta get Mendoza on the site -- this challenge has his name all over it.

First of all you're challenging someone who grew up 20 minutes from the parquet floors of Boston Garden and worshiped Larry as a kid - to a debate about Lakers fans being weird.

But I'll take you on.

[B]Here's my take: Lakers fans aren't strange...they're just plain weak.[B]

Dammit. Preview is good, but I still pull the trigger to fast...

I agree you need to arrive before the end of the first quarter to really be a fan.

I would submit that the blue collar cities in our country are the only ones with real fans. You have to live and die by your team to be a real hard core fan and that means you have to have nothing else going on in your life to distract you from your team. Therefore, by definition, LA and SF have soft fans, but Oakland has real fans.
