Like badminton, fishing, mini-put, or taking a walk, golf is no different then these activities. It's not a sport, it's merely an activity or leisure.

Rebuttal
Just because Tiger Woods has a good physique, a commitment to staying in shape mentally and physically, doesn't make golf anymore of a sport. You could say the same thing about a good chess player with a good physique. As with anything, if you are in a good mental and physical shape, you will generally be better than the majority of other players. Lets wait and see if they change chess to a sport once someone with a good physique becomes a leader.

Until the emergence of Tiger Woods, I would have agreed with you. He has shown that a good physique, a commitment to staying in shape (mentally and physically) and a crazy competitive drive can create separation from the rest of the field. Most other non-sport activites can be domiated by slobs, douchebags, and the like. Now, if the Walrus or Daly were dominating today's game, I'd be right there with ya.

Rebuttal
If being a good athlete were only coincidental to Tiger's success, then your point would be fair, but I think Tiger's superior edge is about 80% mental and 20% physical. That 20% physical edge puts him so far over the top that he becomes the superior golfer that he is. If a chess player were in great physical condition, the gained edge would be far less advantageous. Also, badminton is a very tough sport, requiring tremendous coordination, deep concentration, superior fast twitch muscles, and uncommon wrist flexibility.

Golf is a sport. If golf were not a sport, then there'd be a long list of other things that are way less sporty than golf that would also not be sports. Bowling, archery, ping pong... jousting. I could go on and on, but I won't.

Another day, another smack about whether golf is a sport or not. It all depends upon one's definition of a sport. In my opinion, a "sport" should pose a physical challenge to a greater extent than what golf does. I mean, players are such wusses that they don't even carry their own gear (with weekend golfers driving around in a buggy)- what a joke! Tiger is a great athlete- no question there. But that does not mean that golf is a sport.
