EuroCup should have been more inspiring

I should like soccer. I played it. I enjoy playing it. I think I have a fairly sophisticated appreciation of the game -- at least by the standard of US fans. But I just couldn't get more than mildly interested in the EuroCup, even down to the final game. My son encapsulated perfectly why soccer isn't more popular as a spectator sport. After intently watching the NFL playoffs, NBA finals, start of the MLB season, hell, even the NHL finals and US Open, his question for me in about the 73rd minute was, "Daddy, when will it not be 1-0 any more?" The answer, of course, was never. That will be the final score. I'm not advocating a change in the rules to make it higher scoring. I'm just saying that, as is, for people who grow up watching high-scoring sports, a 1-0 final is boring as hell!

Rather than taking the traditional yes it was inspiring response, I say that it could not have been more inspiring.

The game is not meant to be inspiring on TV, unless you really appreciate the delicacy of the heal touch pass. Don't get me wrong, it is a great game in person at a stadium in Europe or for 6 year-olds. The game was not meant for TV, especially commercial television. Lastly, the way soccer finishes their games is an absolute joke. It is a kin to basketball breaking ties with free throws, football having kickers kick field goals until someone misses or the US Open Championship being only decided by who could make a 20' double-breaking, downhill putt.

So Senor Trigg, the answer is not that the Eurocup should have been more inspiring rather that it got all it could from the limited game of soccer.
