This fiasco with Favre is my worst case scenario as a Packers fan realized. The only way Favre could have more dramatically tarnished his reputation and his legacy would have been if he'd gone on a tri-state killing spree -- and, even then, if one of the three states had been Illinois or Minnesota, he probably would have gotten off in the court of Packer public opinion. But instead we have to deal with this giant goat rodeo of a media spectacle. I was so upset that he retired in the first place, but pulling this stuff at this point in the pre-season is ruining my opinion of him forever. It's really a tragedy.

I'm not sure I really understand your argument. I agree with most of what you said. He's creating a mess, probably for nothing, and probably one that will get worse before it gets better. I think the majority of Packer fans already don't want him back -- I saw a poll to that effect, and read that there was a "rally" in support of Favre in Milwaukee at which only 30 people showed up. I almost don't want to watch the news coverage of this, because it *does* ruin my image of who he is and what he's meant to the organization. The fact that he'd want to end his career on a bad note with the team he's played for almost his entire career is really hard to swallow.

What did you expect? I love Brett Favre but he's an emotional, confused professional football player. He says what he thinks. He has almost no filter. He thinks that he is bigger than the organization and who is telling him something different. He thinks he can throw balls through people and he thinks he can run through the Packers. This thing would die if: 1) The Packers fans (like me) make it clear to him that they are tired of this. He has to be a man and stick to his decision as hard as it might be, 2) He really knew what teams were interested (few and far between).

Given that the list of teams is small, let's just digress from a moment and review the real possibilities (like everyone other pundit but most aren't really being truthful):

1) Bears / Vikings: just will not happen. Ted Thompson is stubborn but he ain't stupid
2) Weak teams that need a QB: Jets, Dolphins, etc - he won't go
3) Baltimore: said yesterday they aren't interested
4) Carolina: If Delhomme is healthy, then I bet they would be in the same situation as Baltimore
5) Tampa Bay: Don't you think Gruden would have been public about his interest already?

So if Brett knew his option was to go to a new system in Tampa (even though it's West Coast it ain't the same) or nowhere, he would stop these shenanigans.

We are just dealing with a guy and a bruised ego. It's nothing more.

Bottom line: his legacy won't be tarnished and his actions should be ruin your image of him because they are fairly consistent with his behavior on and off the field, emotional and ill advised.

I'm really honestly too depressed by this whole thing to even comment on it. Favre's making an ass out of himself. Thompson's not much better, but I can't see what other decision he could make. You can't promise him his job back. You can't just release him for nothing. You don't want to trade him to another team. I don't see what other option Thompson and the Packer management has besides letting him run his mouth off like a petulant child until he decides to change his mind again.
