Alex Ovechkin is the best player in the NHL and is also the best player in the League since Super Mario

I have seen Alex Ovechkin play live several times now and he absolutely blows me away. The size, speed and skill he plays with are something special. Mario was the last guy to show me this type of ability...no one has come close since. Ovechkin has been playing for a crap team for two years now but still manages to lead the league (or is always close) anyway. What a beast!

Um, yeah right! Like, the other day i was like watching Sidney Crosby in his super-cute Reebok gear and thought how much hotter he is than Ovechkin. I totally texted my girlfriend Jen on my Sidekick to check him out on TV. I nearly wet my panties when I saw how much vision he had on the ice. Like, seriously, he knew where everyone was like at any one time. Ohmigod, the tape to tape passes and the way he sets up the play in the zone. The totally nasty Ovechkin and his imperfect jawline is soooooo not sexy. Like, all he does is like motor in one-on-one and passes like only when there's no other play. And sssseriously, does the man play defense? Um, yeah those hits are sorta nice and all, but i'm always like "YUCK! GROSSSSSSSS!" when he gets caught way on the other side of the ice like that cherry pickin' Eric Staal in one of those kooky transition games. At least my like Sidney Crosby is like more responsible on both sides of the game. SID RULEZ!!!!!

As much as it pains me and as much as I hate Sidney, I'm gonna have to agree with the teenybopper. Sidney not only knows where everyone on is on the ice but he's got a wicked shot. Sure, Ovey can stun fans with his one on one moves, but Sidney also has incredible moves. He absolutely undressed the Rangers D and Panthers D (beating 8 men total single-handedly) by himself to score.

I do like Ovey's physicality though. He throws his body (without leaving his feet of course) and absolutely crushes puckhandlers. But even his coach Glen Hanlon has said that he needs to work on his defensive game. He's frequently out of position on many plays. Once he patches up his faults in the other end, he'll challenge Crosby for the title of best player in the NHL. In the meantime, Crosby deserves (maybe Marty Brodeur) the Hart Trophy this year. Without him, the Penguins miss the playoffs once again.

FilipinoFungo, glad to see someone has some hockey knowledge on this site, even if it is misguided. Crosby is quite a talent, I'll give you that, but he doesn't elicit the same breathtaking feeling you get EVERY time Alex touches the puck. Very hard to describe that difference, but you have to see him live (in person) to fully appreciate. You seen him play?

Don't get me wrong man, I'd pay more to watch Alex play than Sidney. I just think that at this point, Sidney's more complete and essential to his team. Alex has the wow factor (that goal on his back comes to mind, as well as his toe-drag and between the leg moves), no doubt about it.

I'm excited to see how Washington does in the next few years. They have a slew of young players that'll mature nicely. Semin and Ovechkin will be a combo to fear.

Issue w/ Ovechkin is that he hasn't been able to make everyone better. While Crosby it's true that Crosby has some talent surrounding him, I think Sid's a significant reason why all those guys are playing as well as they are. Ovechkin on the other hand hasn't gotten great day-in day-out performances from Semin, Laich or the other Caps youngsters. And, I'd say that Ovy's got a better goaltender than Sid, too. The fact that the Pens are challenging for the Division lead while the Caps are gonna miss the playoffs yet again says all you need to know about this debate.
